Hughes 500D became the first model sold in 1976 benefiting from a more powerful engine, a flat tail, and a new five-blade main rotor; the tail rotor with four blades then optional. Hughes 500D was replaced in 1982 by Hughes 500E with a pointed nose and many improvements in the cockpit
