This video show SM-3 and THAAD missiles intercepting ballistic missile target (with a dummy warhead, so no explosive inside) during flight test.
The RIM-161 Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) is an anti ICBM missile used on ships by US Navy and other countries to intercept ballistic missiles as part of the defense system of ballistic missile Aegis. Although designed primarily as an anti-ballistic missile. The SM-3 has been tested and is mainly used by the US Navy and also by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and in the future by the Royal Netherlands Navy .
The THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system is a US military system designed to shoot down ballistic missiles of short-, medium- and intermediate-range in its terminal phase, through a system of direct impact. The missile warhead leads, and depends on the kinetic energy of the impact to destroy the target. It was designed to intercept Scud missiles and similar weapons, but also has a limited capability against ICBMs.
The system is designed, built and integrated by Lockheed Martin Space Systems acting as prime contractor. Key subcontractors include Raytheon, Boeing, Aerojet, Rocketdyne, Honeywell, BAE Systems and MiltonCAT. Its development was budgeted at more than 700 million $ in 2004.
