The M1 Abrams is a heavy tank produced in the United States by General Dynamics . It is the main armored through the United States Army , the Marine Corps United States , and the armies of Egypt , Kuwait , Saudi Arabia and Australia . I named in tribute to General Creighton Abrams , commander of US forces in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972, and Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1972 to 1974. He is a well-armed and heavily armored car, designed for armored warfare modern. The most notable features of the M1 Abrams include the use of a powerful engine based on a gas turbine , the adoption of sophisticated composite armor , and a new system of storage of ammunition in special compartments that in case of explosion, redirect the force outwards, multiplying the chances of survival of the crew. It is the most current heavy truck service.
It entered service in 1979 , replacing the M60 Patton and M48A5 and M48A6 Patton and living for 10 years with the improved M60A3, which had entered service in 1978 . Have since been deployed three main versions: the M1, M1A1, and M1A2, which have been incorporated weapons, protection and improved electronics. Along with regular upgrades of older cars, these improvements have allowed this vehicle veteran remain in front line service.
