In 1973, British Aerospace and McDonnell Douglas studying an improved version of Harrier able to carry a load twice as large a distance twice as large. The project was canceled by the British in 1975, as the Americans call to work alone on a less ambitious version that does not require developing a new reactor. November 9, 1978, AV-8A with a new composite wing made its first flight. Leading edge extensions were added later to improve maneuverability.
